introducing scabies skin study

By Simon Thornley (UoA)

A team at the University of Auckland (UoA) has invited our school to participate in a study of the students’ skin, which is particularly interested in assessing how common scabies is in the school community. Scabies is a microscopic mite that lives in the skin and causes itchy spots, a bit like flea bites. This condition has not been studied for over thirty years in New Zealand and recent evidence indicates that untreated scabies may lead to more important health conditions like bacterial skin infection, rheumatic fever and serious kidney disease.

I would be grateful if you would consider giving consent for your child to participate in the study. The study will involve your child having an approximately ten minute check of their skin by a certified family doctor. Any skin spots will be photographed in a non-identifying way. Genetic tests (PCR) will be carried out if scabies is suspected and recommendations and prescriptions for treatment given if your child is suspected to have the condition.

The good news is that scabies is simple to treat. This can be undertaken on the evening after the check and consists of treating the household with permethrin lotion. The lotion is applied to each household members in the evening and left on overnight, then washed off. Usually, this is enough to eradicate the mite for good and avoid any need to restrict school attendance.

Initial findings of the study show a higher than expected prevalence of the mite in early childcare centers. Please be assured that all study information will be kept private and you and your child will be informed of the diagnosis, if it is present. For any further information or if you need any clarification, please contact Dr Simon Thornley (UoA) (s.thornley@auckland.ac.nz; mobile: 0212991752) is available to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about the study.

A presentation explaining the study on the internet is available here:

https://youtu.be/ZMEX8rW0UOo

This is an opportunity to get a quick skin check and be reassured that we are doing all we can to safeguard our students’ health. The study will also contribute to wider knowledge of how common this problem is and so help address the problem at a population level. Please complete the attached consent form. Consent forms will be sent at a later date.

This study has been approved by the Commissioner of Al-Madinah School.

Te Rito and sLSR

Te Rito is a platform where important information about our learners is securely

shared and stored. When the learner shifts between schools, the information is accessed by their new school and hence appropriate action can take place immediately and re-gathering of information can be avoided. This makes the process faster in meeting the learner needs. Te Rito has been created with the leaner and whanau at the centre of its design. Te Rito improves the ability to make decision in the best interest of the learners, by providing better understanding about their needs, talents and skills. Therefore, informed, targeted action will be taken at all levels of education system – including classroom, school/kura and local community.

The sLSR (learning support register) is a tool on Te Rito, which will be used to keep all information together to help schools, kura, early learning services, and kohanga reo understand and respond to the learning support needs of children. They will be standardised and will have a common language to describe the learning support needs, minimise security and privacy risk, and improve the quality of

data across education system. Using sLSR will enable better use of data to improve outcomes of our children (akonga).

In conclusion, Te Rito and sLSR is a learning support register that contains information about learning support needs of students in a school, the nature of that need and any support planned.

Te Rito has been approved by the AMS School Commissioner for its use. We will the parental consent to enter individual student’s details into the Te Rito software. Consent forms to follow at a later stage.
